What is Success?

How do I measure success when it concerns my son? Over the years, I have celebrated success if we got through the day without any tantrums. As my son grew into a man the meaning of success has been redefined.
While in his last year of school, having my son actually attend class was considered success. It was during this year that things changed. I began to notice my son embracing change. He was eager to be like his peers. But by trying to be like them he faced failure.

This is difficult for any parent to watch especially when your child has special needs. With Chads limited understanding of the world around him it was difficult for both of us as he tried to find his way. Eventually, Chad showed me just how determined he was when he would take the transit all over town.

Over the last two years, I have seen the immense growth and maturity blossom within my son. He is now living on his own with minimal assistance and has held down a difficult job. He has goals and dreams that with time can happen. He knows right from wrong and is someone I am very proud of.

I realize that within my sons lifetime his successes will be measured differently. It may take him longer, but  eventually he will achieve his goals. He will have a long term job which may result in a career, he will have a home, maybe even get married and have children. But really as long as he is happy I feel that can be determined as a success.
