The Long Road to Recovery

If you have read my blog you know that I have recently broken my elbow, well I guess it's been a few months, about 2 1/2 to be exact. Since then I've had to come to terms with a lot of things, mostly allowing myself time to heal. It's been a tough road to travel, I'm not a good patient and I am not a very patient person. When I first got hurt I required surgery to put my arm back together, this included metal plate and screws. Then being sent home with a cast and sling and pain meds. Ugh, not fun, especially if you are used to doing everything for yourself.
The first few days of my recovery were not only painful but eye opening, as I navigated trying to get dressed, taking a shower, washing my hair, you know the daily activities we take for granted. I finally resorted to a nightie for my daily wear, easy, functional and no hassle. Not only could I not dress myself, I couldn't cook for myself. Thank goodness for my hubby who helped me tremendously, for I was completely helpless.
As I progressed through my recovery I saw small improvements. First, being able to move my fingers, then my hand, and finally my whole arm.
Today I am able to move my arm, but not straighten it, I can pick up objects but not lift. I am doing daily physiotherapy to help loosen the muscles and strengthen my arm. I am not the same and probably never will be able to use my arm the way I used to. But each day brings new hope with little improvements.
