AISH what is it?

AISH

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped otherwise known as AISH was designed by the Alberta Government to provide financial aid to those that fall under the umbrella of disabilities. The criteria for receiving this benefit are that the person that is applying for AISH must be severely limited or unable to earn a living.

Brain injury and acquired brain injury falls under this umbrella of services. The guidelines for receiving this type of assistance include requirements such as a test based on the standard IQ consistent with the Professional Guidelines for Psychologists. The person has to have an IQ that falls below the normal range.

This programs helps the mentally challenged to live a fuller life by giving them the independency of living outside the natural home and assisting them in managing their money for those that need this type of assistance. They sponsor the child in their everyday living and help place them in jobs that will make them feel useful in the community.

Depending on the mental degree of the recipient they can be placed in a group home that will help them merge into everyday living or place them in an apartment where they can live a normal life and gain confidence in themselves.

The upper limit of this assistance depends on how many people are involved. For example if there is one person they may receive up to $1500.00 per month. For a couple that live together the assistance would be $2500.00 per month.

There is also additional help for those clients that are training for work that requires special clothing or tools. Transportation to and from this work place can be assisted by AISH in monetary compensation.
